Death of Prof. Jonathan Frankel

We are greatly saddened to learn of the passing of Prof. Jonathan Frankel, emeritus professor of Russian and Contemporary Jewish Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Born in London and educated at Cambridge, Prof. Frankel was an influential scholar and a dedicated teacher. His many books and articles include the classic volume, /Prophecy and Politics: Socialism, Nationalism and the Russian Jews, 1862--1917/ (Cambridge University Press, 1981);and, more recently, /The //Damascus// Affair: 'Ritual Murder,' Politics, and the Jews in 1840/ (Cambridge University Press, 1997). He also was one of the general editors of the important journal /Studies in Contemporary Jewry. /

Prof. Eli Lederhendler writes that Professor Frankel succumbed after a long battle with illness. The funeral will take place in Jerusalem's Givat Shaul cemetery on Friday the 9th at 11 am. Edith and the family will sit shiva at the family's home at Davidson 8 in Jerusalem.
